The GoPro SD Card Most People Overthink (Here's What You Actually Need)

But if you're running a Hero 13 Black, a Hero 12, or one of the new Mission 1 cameras, there are a few things worth understanding before you buy. What GoPro actually requires in 2026

GoPro's updated spec calls for a card rated A2 and V30 at minimum for the Hero 13 Black and Mission 1 series. If you've seen older articles recommending UHS-3, that was the previous requirement. V30 means a sustained write speed of at least 30MB/s. One practical note: the Hero 13 Black's max bitrate is 150Mbps, which translates to about 18.75 MB/s of actual write demand. The SanDisk Extreme handles that with room to spare.

The step-up: SanDisk Extreme Pro

The SanDisk Extreme Pro costs a bit more and gets you faster USB transfer speeds when you pull footage off the card to your computer. In-camera performance is nearly identical to the regular Extreme. So if you're the kind of person who dumps 60GB of footage onto a laptop at the end of every day, the Pro is worth the extra spend. If you're not, save the money.

The budget pick: PNY Pro Elite

The PNY Pro Elite costs a few dollars less than SanDisk while still meeting A2 and V30 requirements. You give up a small amount of overall performance, but nothing that will matter inside a GoPro. GoPro officially tests and recommends PNY cards. If price is the deciding factor, grab this one without guilt.

The runner-up: Lexar Professional 1066x Silver Series

The Lexar Professional 1066x is the strongest alternative to SanDisk. The 128GB and larger versions offer write speeds around 120MB/s, which is meaningfully faster than the standard Extreme. If you're shooting Mission 1 at heavy workloads or you just want the peace of mind of more headroom, this is the card to look at. It's priced higher than the SanDisk Extreme, so check current pricing and see if the gap justifies it for your workflow.

What to avoid

Don't grab any card that's missing A2 and V30 ratings for a Hero 12 or newer. Incompatible cards don't just record slowly: they can corrupt clips mid-shoot, cause recording dropouts, or drain your battery faster than normal. GoPro is specific about this, and the risk isn't worth saving $8.

Also worth knowing: certain high-capacity cards, including some 512GB Lexar variants, are officially marked "Not Recommended" by GoPro due to compatibility issues. Check GoPro's current "Works With GoPro" list before buying any card in that size range. Bigger doesn't always mean better here.

One thing everyone skips
