Canon R6 Mark III vs R5 Mark II: Save $1,500 or Buy the Better Camera?
Here's the verdict: most Canon shooters should buy the R6 Mark III. It's $2,799 vs $4,299 for the R5 Mark II, the autofocus is essentially the same, and it actually shoots faster in electronic shutter mode. For portraits, weddings, events, travel, and casual wildlife, the R6 Mark III does the job at a price that leaves real money for glass.
The R5 Mark II is a genuinely better camera. Whether that difference shows up in your photos depends entirely on what you shoot. Here's who actually needs which one.
What you're choosing between
The R6 Mark III launched in November 2025 with a 32.5MP full-frame sensor and the DIGIC X processor. The R5 Mark II came out in July 2024 with a 45MP stacked CMOS sensor. Both are full-frame RF-mount mirrorless bodies. Both will produce outstanding images in the hands of an enthusiast photographer.
The gap between them is real. It only translates to better photos for a specific kind of shooter.
The R6 Mark III
What's good
Forty frames per second in electronic shutter mode. That's faster than the R5 Mark II's 30fps, which is a genuinely surprising flip given the price difference. Canon carried over the AF algorithms from the R5 Mark II, so subject tracking, animal detection, and eye AF perform at nearly the same level. The 32.5MP resolution is a real step up from the original R6 (20MP) and the R6 Mark II (24MP).
Video is also a bigger deal than people expected. The R6 Mark III records 7K internally at up to 60p in Canon RAW Light, plus Open Gate recording at 7K. For a hybrid shooter who wants serious video capabilities without going full cinema-rig, this is a lot of camera.
The new Register People Priority feature lets you register up to 10 faces in-camera. At a wedding, a family reunion, or any event where you need to track specific people in a crowd, this is a genuinely useful tool.
What's bad
The sensor readout is slower: around 13.2ms vs 6.3ms on the R5 Mark II. That means more rolling shutter risk in electronic shutter mode, which matters if you're shooting fast lateral motion like sports or wildlife sprinting across the frame. The R6 Mark III also drops to 12-bit readout at top speeds, where the R5 Mark II holds 14-bit. That's a real dynamic range difference in challenging light.
No Eye Control AF. If you've used that feature on the R5 Mark II, you'll miss it. The R6 Mark III's low-light AF bottoms out at -6.5 EV vs -7.5 EV on the R5 Mark II, a one-stop difference that shows up in dim venues and dark wildlife situations.
What's missing
No top-plate status LCD. The EVF panel is 3.69M dots vs 5.76M dots on the R5 Mark II. The shell is polycarbonate on a magnesium chassis, where the R5 Mark II goes full magnesium alloy. None of these are dealbreakers, but you're getting a slightly less premium physical package. And unlike the R5 Mark II, there's no active cooling grip option. What's good
The 45MP stacked sensor is the heart of this camera, and it's excellent. The 6.3ms readout is fast enough that rolling shutter essentially disappears in everyday shooting. 14-bit files at speed mean you're pulling maximum information out of every frame. For landscape, architecture, or any work where you crop heavily or print large, those extra 12.5MP over the R6 Mark III are genuinely meaningful.
The 8K 60p internal RAW video is the benchmark for hybrid shooters who need cinema-grade deliverables. The active cooling grip makes all-day 8K RAW recording viable. Eye Control AF works and works well. Low-light AF down to -7.5 EV is class-leading. The magnesium alloy body and top-plate LCD are the kind of build quality you expect from a $4,300 camera.
What's bad
30fps in electronic shutter mode. For a sports or wildlife shooter, the R6 Mark III actually wins on burst rate. The R5 Mark II also costs $1,500 more, which is a significant chunk of money that could go toward a better lens.
What's missing

Portraits, weddings, events, travel: Buy the R6 Mark III. The AF is comparable, 32.5MP is more than enough resolution, and $1,500 in savings buys you a very good RF prime. The Register People Priority feature is a genuine wedding-day asset.
Wildlife and birding: This is closer. If your subjects are running hard across the frame, the R5 Mark II's faster readout and 14-bit files matter. Hybrid video work: Depends on your deliverables. For social and web, the R6 Mark III's 7K RAW Light is excellent. For broadcast or cinema work, the R5 Mark II's 8K 60p RAW with active cooling is in a different category.
Landscape and architecture: Go with the R5 Mark II. Cropping, printing large, recovering highlights in tough dynamic range situations. Those 45MP and 14-bit files earn their keep when you're working the image hard in post.

Buy the R6 Mark III. For the overwhelming majority of enthusiast photographers, $2,799 for nearly identical autofocus, faster burst shooting, great video, and 32.5MP of resolution is the smarter buy. The $1,500 you save will buy you one of Canon's sharpest RF primes, which will do more for your images than the additional resolution and sensor speed of the R5 Mark II.
