Firefly Photography Is Easier Than You Think (If You Get These 4 Things Right)

Firefly photos look like magic. Hundreds of little light trails floating through a dark forest, the whole scene glowing with something that feels almost impossible to photograph. But the technique behind those shots is genuinely approachable — any camera with manual controls and a tripod can do this.

The hard part is the field work. Here's exactly how to get it right.

When and where to shoot

Timing matters more than any camera setting. Fireflies are most active between 30 minutes and 2 hours after sunset, so plan your arrival early enough to set up in daylight. Trying to mount your camera on a tripod in the dark is miserable.

The best nights are cloudy or humid, especially after rain. A half-moon behind cloud cover gives you just enough ambient light to see the landscape without washing out the firefly flashes. Avoid shooting near streetlights or other artificial sources — light pollution kills the effect fast.

If you're after synchronous fireflies specifically (the species that flash in unison, mostly found in places like the Great Smoky Mountains), the real show doesn't start until around 9:00 p.m. and peaks around 10:00 to 10:30 p.m. Scout your location during the day so you're not fumbling around in the dark trying to find a good composition.

Gear you actually need

A DSLR or mirrorless body with full manual controls. A fast lens, f/1.8 or f/2.8 at minimum. A sturdy tripod. And an intervalometer.

For the lens, wide angles between 14mm and 35mm work well for expansive forest scenes. If you want close-up shots of individual fireflies on a branch or leaf, a macro lens is the tool. But most of the iconic firefly images you've seen are wide shots with dozens of light trails across the frame — and for those, anything fast in the 24-35mm range is ideal.

The intervalometer is non-negotiable. You're going to shoot continuous frames for an hour or more, so set it and let it run. Camera settings

Start here: f/2.8 or wider, ISO 800 to 1600, shutter speed around 4 to 10 seconds per frame. Adjust from there based on how bright the flashes are reading in your test shots.

As the night deepens and ambient light drops, you can push ISO higher. The goal is to capture the firefly flashes without turning the sky into a bright, washed-out mess. Keep exposures between 10 and 30 seconds maximum.

Manual focus only. Autofocus doesn't work in the dark, full stop. Set your focus around sunset while you can still see your subject, then don't touch it. Focus on something at the distance where the fireflies will be — the tree line, a fence post, whatever anchors the scene.

Shoot RAW. You'll have a lot more room in post to pull detail out of the shadows and manage digital noise from the high ISO.

The technique that makes great shots: exposure stacking

A 30-minute single exposure will collect so much noise and ambient light bleed that you'll end up with a muddy mess.

The better method is to shoot a series of short exposures and stack them in post. Set your intervalometer to fire continuously, 3 to 5 second exposures or longer depending on conditions, for 45 minutes to an hour. You'll end up with dozens or hundreds of frames, each capturing a few flashes.

Then in Photoshop, load all the frames as individual layers and change the blending mode to Lighten. That mode keeps the brightest pixels from each layer — meaning every firefly flash from every frame shows through in the final composite. One photographer documented combining 50 individual 19-second exposures to capture 16 minutes of firefly activity in a single final image. The result looks like something you could never capture in real time, because you can't.

OM System cameras have a built-in "Live Composite" mode that does a version of this stacking in-camera in real time, which is genuinely useful if you're shooting with one. But any body can produce the same result in post.

For processing the final stack, the firefly glow has a warm yellowish tint that holds up well to a small saturation boost. Noise reduction on the background layer (before you stack) will clean up the high-ISO grain without softening the light trails themselves. Field etiquette (this matters)

No camera flash. Ever. It disturbs the fireflies and ruins your exposure.

If you need light to navigate, use a red light. Red light doesn't affect your night vision or spook the fireflies the way a white flashlight will. It also won't ruin a frame if someone catches the edge of your beam.

Arrive early, be patient, and stay put once you've found your spot. Fireflies come and go unpredictably — wandering around looking for a better position tends to produce nothing. Pick a composition you believe in before dark and commit to it.

Insect repellent. Apply it before you get to the shooting location, and let it dry. Applying it in the field means you're touching your face and gear with your hands, which is just a miserable way to spend an evening.

What to expect on your first night out

Probably frustration, followed by a few frames that hint at something special, followed by the drive home where you realize you've got something worth editing.

Firefly photography has a learning curve that's almost entirely about patience and field judgment — reading the conditions, knowing when the peak activity is, being set up and ready before it happens. The camera settings are the easy part. Get those dialed in before you leave home, so your brain is free to actually watch what's happening in front of you.

Come back a second night. It's almost always better than the first.
