How to Photograph the Northern Lights (Without Coming Home With Green Soup)
2026 is one of the best years in a decade to photograph the aurora. The sun just passed Solar Maximum for Cycle 25, meaning solar activity is still elevated and the lights are firing regularly. After this window, the next Solar Max won't arrive until around 2036. So if you've been waiting for the right time to make this trip, this is it.
Here's everything you need to actually capture it — settings, gear, apps, and the things most guides don't cover until you're standing in a field at midnight wondering why your photos look nothing like what your eyes just saw.
Before you go anywhere: get the forecast right
The aurora doesn't run on a schedule. You can book a week in Norway and see nothing, or stumble into a display on night one. Forecasting is how you tilt the odds.

For the data-obsessed, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) website goes deep on solar activity. Most photographers won't need it, but it's there.
One thing to understand about KP: if you're at lower latitudes, like the continental US, you generally need a KP of 5 or higher to see lights on the horizon. Higher is better. At KP 7 or above, displays can reach surprisingly far south.
Best times and locations
January through late April is the prime window. Late August through December works too as nights get longer. Norway, Iceland, and Alaska are the classic destinations for a reason — consistent dark skies and high magnetic latitude.
Wherever you go, get away from city light. Use the Blue Marble Light Pollution Map (a Google/NASA collaboration) to find genuinely dark areas near you. An hour of driving is worth it.
Camera settings for the northern lights
Shoot in manual mode. Auto anything will fight you all night.
Here's the starting point:
- Aperture: f/1.4 to f/2.8. As wide as your lens goes. You need light, and a slow aurora display won't wait for a stopped-down lens.
- ISO: 1600–3200 to start. Full-frame bodies can push to ISO 5000–12800 without falling apart. Crop sensors get noisier faster, so be more conservative.
- Shutter speed: 5–15 seconds for slow-moving displays. If the aurora is dancing fast, drop to 3–5 seconds or you'll turn curtains of light into a blurry smear.
- White balance: around 3500K. This keeps the greens clean and the purples rich. Auto white balance will pull everything warm and wreck the colors. Set it manually and leave it.
- Shoot RAW. Always. The aurora's tonal range is huge and JPEGs clip detail you'll want in post.

The one thing most guides skip: focus. Your autofocus is useless in a dark Arctic field. Switch to manual focus, turn on live view, zoom in on a bright star on your screen, and rotate the focus ring until that star is a pinpoint. Lock it there. Don't touch it again for the rest of the night — even bumping the focus ring will cost you a keeper.
Gear you actually need
The list is shorter than you think.
A solid tripod is mandatory. Not a flimsy travel tripod that creaks in the wind. Something that genuinely stays put over a 10-second exposure. Any movement shows immediately at these shutter speeds.
Cold temperatures kill batteries fast. Bring at least one spare, keep it in an inner pocket close to your body, and rotate them. A fully charged power bank for your phone is smart too — forecasting apps running all night will drain it.
Use a red flashlight to move around your scene. Red light lets you see without blowing out your night vision or annoying other photographers who are also trying to shoot. It's a small thing that makes a real difference when you're checking your shots and adjusting settings.
If you're hiking to your spot, getting your pack right matters more than most people think — especially when you're moving in the dark over uneven terrain with cold fingers.
What to actually look for in the scene
The aurora alone is spectacular, but the best shots have foreground. A frozen lake, a mountain ridge, an old boat, a lighthouse. Anything that gives the image scale and anchors the viewer to a place.
Arrive before dark and scout. Walking around at midnight on unfamiliar terrain is how people twist ankles and miss the display entirely. Know where you want to stand before the lights come out.
Also watch the sky, not just your screen. The aurora moves. A display that looks faint to the north can surge overhead in minutes. Stay aware of what's happening above you, and only drop to your camera when it's worth capturing.
Shooting on your phone
Modern iPhones and Android phones handle the northern lights better than most people expect. Use night mode or a manual camera app, prop the phone firmly on a tripod or flat surface, turn off flash and digital zoom, and aim for 5–15 second exposures. Some phones and apps can push to 30 seconds, which helps with faint auroras.

After the shoot
RAW files from aurora sessions usually need some help in post. Lift the shadows, pull back highlights if the bright parts are clipping, and fine-tune white balance to taste. The 3500K starting point gets you close, but the final look is personal.

The honest part
You will have nights where the forecast says KP 6 and you see nothing. Clouds roll in. The display fades. You drive four hours and get back at 3am with nothing on your card.
That's aurora photography. Go for at least 5 nights if you can, build in flexibility, and treat every clear night as a genuine opportunity rather than a guarantee. The trips where it works — where the curtains are rolling overhead and your shutter is clicking — make the blank nights irrelevant.
